Developing skills in the kitchen is an essential part of growing up. My earliest memories include watching my grandmother hum sweet songs as she whipped up a variety of Afghan recipes. She was known for her incredible cooking skills… and for good reason. She thoroughly enjoyed the cooking process and encouraged me to join her whenever I stayed over at her house. I think of her every time I replicate some of her recipes and feel grateful to her for instilling in me the love of cooking.

When my kids were old enough to join me in the kitchen, I would assign them different chores to help keep them occupied, especially during time off from school. To my delight, they were always more than happy to stir the pot or whip up eggs! But I did not have a formal way of teaching them how to learn to cook step-by-step. Like many mothers, I planned to pen down old family recipes in hopes of passing them on to my kids one day but I never really got around to it due to time-constraints.
At the height of the pandemic, it became quite clear that life as we knew it would have to encounter detours. Every summer, my kids went to camp and learned essential skills. But last year I was forced to cancel everything in a bid to keep my family safe. Quite honestly, though, I felt at a loss as to how best I should keep them busy.
Along came Raddish Kids!
What is a Raddish Kids Subscription Box?
Raddish Kids is a cooking club experience any family will truly enjoy signing up for. I discovered the subscription service after viewing an ad on Facebook. I thought Raddish would be perfect for my kids and signed them up right away.
Raddish Kids is the brainchild of former middle school social studies teacher, Samantha Barnes. For a decade, she successfully operated cooking clubs geared towards teaching children important life skills such as cooking and learning their way around the kitchen. In 2014, she created Raddish Kids in a bid to allow children the world over to learn how to cook while having fun.
Children as young as 4 and as old as 14 can enjoy the many aspects of this subscription service. Every month, a new theme arrives in the box that introduces kids to different cultures and cuisines from around the world. The kits are designed to never repeat.
Raddish Kids is a business with conscience. During the early days of the pandemic, the team gave away 50,000 cooking kits to families who suddenly found themselves homeschooling. Raddish has also donated more than $30,000 to World Central Kitchen for feeding children across the country.
The team believes in the fact that food can bring people together and empower them to accomplish a whole lot more. Hence, Raddish Kids launched a scholarship program for underserved kids with a passion for cooking.
This month, the team is donating 10% of subscriptions sold through February 20th to their regional food bank @lafoodbank.
How much does Raddish Kids cost?

My Honest Review about Raddish Kids
Our first kit arrived within three business days. Opening the box, we found beautifully laminated recipes in visually appealing colors. Japanese culture and cuisine were the focus of that first kit. I was impressed by the quality of cooking utensils that came along with it. My kids were excited to make sticky rice and had a blast rolling up sushi!
The following month, we were even more thrilled to receive the pancake making kit. My daughter takes great pride in making the apple compote recipe and jokes that no pancake should ever be consumed without the side of compote!
Earlier this month, Raddish Kids sent us their ‘Family Fun Night’ kit. The kit includes three recipes that are simple enough for kids to follow along. That said, even I and my husband enjoyed the baked potatoes, confetti corn muffins, and domino shortbread cookies.
One of the things I truly value about Raddish Kids, aside from the recipes, is that there is a focus on introducing children to more than just meal prep. By offering step-by-step easy to understand instructions, my children feel confident enough to try the recipes with limited help from me.
Aside from the cooking aspect, my kids enjoy the ‘Table Talk’ feature. The Family Fun Night kit came with four flash cards that prompted my little ones to communicate as they waited for their meals to come out of the oven. The kit also came with instructions on how to play ‘Spoons’ – a fast-paced family card game. It was endearing to see them giggle and enjoy a snowy night indoors in the most fun way.
Raddish Kids sends cooking utensils in every kit. These are made of high quality material that will surely be used for a long time to come. This month, we received a beautiful green spatula that is as ergonomic and sturdy as it is aesthetically pleasing. We have a couple drawers full of cooking utensils that we use from time to time to prepare a variety of meals.
Lastly, my kids receive an iron-on patch every month that reflects the contents of their kit. When I first signed up my children, I requested a sibling bundle so that my 9-year old could iron her monthly patch onto her very own apron. My kids really love having their own little aprons so that they can decorate them. The aprons and the patches are, once again, made of high quality material that can withstand washing.
Pros:
- Carefully selected recipes that are easy to follow.
- Exposure to different cultures through food.
- Laminated printed materials that will withstand fading and kitchen messes
- Beautiful, sturdy, and ergonomic kitchen utensils that will be appreciated by kids and adults alike.
- Fun activities to keep kids sufficiently busy.
- Eliminates the need to research kid-friendly recipes and educational material.
- Kids eagerly await the next box and are thrilled to practice new skills.
- A great gift idea for little kids everywhere.
- A wonderful alternative to signing for extra-curricular activities especially during this pandemic.
- Three subscription options that fit a variety of budgets.
- Easy cancellation policy with no questions asked.
- Make lasting memories with kids in the kitchen!
Cons:
- Some adult supervision is necessary. For instance, I make sure I help during the cooking or baking process to keep the kiddos safe.
- Appropriate for ages 6 and up. Ideally, kids aged 8-14 will truly enjoy the service. My youngest is 6 and needs a lot of guidance during the process.
- The box does not include ingredients. You’ll need to purchase groceries separately.
- Some prep time involved.
- Cost might feel excessive. However, every box comes with quality kitchen utensils that will withstand wear and tear. Moreover, compared to other extra-curricular activities that charge per child, Raddish Kids can be enjoyed by all the kids in the household for the price of one box.
Raddish Kids has been a life-saver especially during these times when we don’t feel comfortable enrolling them in extra-curricular activities. My kids enjoy preparing meals and trying out new recipes – several of which have become family favorites.
I must also emphasize the fact that the subscription service has allowed my children to learn important life skills such as patience and following directions. They learn to respect one another and work together as a team to accomplish their goal of producing hearty meals. These skills, along with understanding why certain cooking steps should occur sequentially will go a long way in preparing my children to become better planners.
Raddish Kids has completely exceeded our expectations. The service promises educational and entertainment value and, quite honestly, it has truly delivered on all levels.

My dad taught me how to cook when I was young as well

It’s an important life skill and can help brew creativity too!
Nina says
Seems like a great idea. Some kids don’t get much baking/cooking experience and it’s not really good for their future.
Seema I. says
That’s right. Learning home economics is a must because there are many young adults who struggle in the kitchen and end up relying on processed foods and take-out meals. Learning to cook can enable children to be mindful when it comes to clean eating. Thank you for your comment.

This is a super fun idea. My kids keep asking to cook more (or I want them to, anyway) and my daughter would love this.
